"We ended up on opposite sides of the country, in many senses of the word. Alaska is just about as different and as far away from Florida as you can get. But even though in the last few years Nick was alive, we only talked a few times a year, when we did, it was just like when we lived in the same town. The only thing that was different is that the last time I saw Nick he was happy. All the negativity of being stagnant for years, floating around from place ti place was washed away. He had found something that I still haven't. And in Classic Nick Fashion, he passed away when things were finally looking up for him. But i'm glad he actually got to feel at home, even if it was only for a short time. Nick died in Naples, Florida on December 6th, 2007. There was a formal viewing for family and friends before he was cremated and his ashes made there way back to Alaska He was laid to rest in a place that he visited daily. A celebration took place and people gathered, sang songs, told stories and remebered Nick in whatever way they saw fit. Here is a paraphrased retelling of that day from a friend who was there. It had been raining for 24 hours and the clouds stayed close to the ground. The sun tiredly surrendered and hid behind the mountain peaks. At first only a few people gathered in the little cove where, everyday, Nick walked his dog. Soon car load after car load of people appeared. People from all walks of life came to pay there respects. It hit me then how much he had grown and just how many lives he had touched. I was lucky enough to get to see Nick the last night he was alive. We visited, talked, drank, and spent time finding out what eachother had been doing as of late. At the end of the night we said our goodbye's. He was leaving to go back to Alaska and we knew we wouldn't see eachother for a while. it was the best possible way I could have goodbye to a friend."

I know a lot of people here were Big Old Eyes fans, so I figured this would be the right place to throw this. Wisconsin Dream Guitar is Rob, who wrote most of Big Old Eyes' songs, and Leigh O'Neill, who helped with some BOE recordings (like slide on "I am Not a Gentleman," for the fanatics out there). As a duo, they make some pretty epic music. Leigh's drumming compliments Rob's songwriting really well and the chemistry is unbeatable.

One of my favorite screamo bands of all time.

Saetia had numerous members throughout its existence, with frequent changes in membership. The band's first bass player, Alex Madara, was affected by a severe allergic reaction which placed him into a coma for eight days, finally resulting in his death on 1998-12-14.

Their drummer, Greg Drudy, was the original drummer of the indie-rock band Interpol prior to their current popularity. He currently runs the record label Level Plane. Other members of the band continued their musical careers in numerous outfits, some of them joining screamo bands such as Off Minor, Hot Cross, and The Fiction, as well as the nu-metal band Instruction.

If you liked Marnie Stern, Hella is a pretty big influence on her work, and Zach Hill did drumming on her most recent release. Check it out if you're looking for something fast paced and, more than likely, a little different than what you listen to frequently.

Mother Mother has been at the top of my charts since I started listening to them a while ago and in honour of seeing them live, I'm going to upload their albums. This is their first album, it's quite heavily acoustic, but more than likely quite a bit different than the acoustic music you usually listen to. To me, Mother Mother is this decade's answer to the Pixies (even though the Pixies are still *really* popular and prevalent). Ryan Guldemond's singing voice reminds me so much of Frank Black that I find it uncanny and their use of harmonies is quite similar. If you're looking for something awesome that I'm sure will be *huge* in a couple years, check this out. They're already getting quite a bit of airplay on CBC.

If you're looking for some easy listening along the lines of Jolie Holland or Julie Doiron, give this a shot. I was definitely very impressed.

So just after announcing a Pavement reuinion world tour, yes, a Pavement reunion world tour, I found that Spiral Stairs (Pavement's lesser known co-songwriter and guitarist who also formed a post-Pavement band called Preston School of Industry) was releasing a solo album. I searched for an advance copy and I luckily found one. It's really good; a lot of the guitar tone is reminscent of Pavement's heyday, but is significantly more refined. Overall, the album has a really classic rock feel to it; if I'm not mistaken Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys did some work with him on it. Check it out if you're looking for some legitimate rock and roll.

Hey kids! It's been a while since i posted anything for you, so here's an album by the late, great Cave In.

Early in their career, the band played crushing hardcore with crunchy guitars and occasional rocking melodies. Somewhere along the way, they decided to drop the hardcore thing and make spaced out rock with heavy guitars and some metal undercurrents.

Jupiter is probably my favorite of their un-hardcore days, this release containing demo versions of "Stained Silver" and "Rubber and Glue" (titled "Bigger Riff" here) from the follow-up album Antenna. These versions are better than the ones that made it to Antenna, in my opinion.

ANYWAYS, just check it out. It's a solid album from a solid band.

Everyone who knows Finlands Ajattara knows of hateful metal about whores, hell and sin. well. this album is a bit different. Still the same old hateful Ajattara but.... acoustic. and with a Didgeridoo no less. And the bass parts played on a Nylon String acoustic. I had my doubts and they were squashed. Its nothing less of amazing. This is quite a huge departure from previous albums and it turned out very well. Good on them for taking a chance like this. Ikuisen Aamun Sara has even been described by some as "Tribal Rape Music"

If you're anything like me, you're a *huge* Built to Spill fan. You love everything from "Ultimate Alternative Wavers" to "You In Reverse"; in fact, you even like "Ancient Melodies of the Future". I've been anxiously awaiting not only the release of their newest album, "There is No Enemy", scheduled for release on October 6th, but the leak as well. I search for it every morning before class/work and have been consistently dissappointed. However, today (yesterday), they leaked a track from the album, titled "Hindsight". The track itself is solid; there's no epic guitarwork, but rather, more "sophisticated" guitars. The content and melody hearkens the "Keep it Like a Secret" days, which is by no means a bad thing.

The Dear Hunter's debut. Layered and complex instrumentals make up the musical heart of the album, primarily in the style of progressive rock but also incorporating elements of orchestral music, blues-rock, jazz, ragtime, and ambient, sometimes several times in the space of a single song. The vocals are similarly varied, with pop-ballad sections giving way to dense harmonization that would shame a barbershop quartet.

The album is also a concept album, the first in a set of 6 telling the surreal story of the titular character The Dear Hunter.

I like this one a lot, but Act II (The second album) is better in my opinion.

This year, Beck chose to re-release this album with 13 previously unreleased tracks that were recorded around the same time. This is that album.

As a former teenager who listened to punk almost exclusively for a couple years (aside from some classic Pink Floyd and artists like Nick Cave), I find myself currently very particular in the punk music that I listen to now, which mainly consists of bands that I used to listen to. The (International) Noise Conspiracy is a band formed as a result of the dissipation of the Refused and do sound reasonably similar. I, however, am not a *huge* fan of the Refused; I think they're a cool band with a good sound, but for some reason I never really got too into them. If you're looking some new(er) Punk to sink your teeth into, definitely give this a try. I really dig their anti-capitalist agenda (a characteristic of a lot of punk bands granted, but some fail pretty pretty epic-ly), but I have a leftist bias. ;)

Radio Moscow is a relatively new blues-rock band from the States; they are often cited as being Psychedelic, but I slightly disagree with a label, at least in this respect. This album is their first release and is produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys (I think I posted his album on the blog and some people dug it). Radio Moscow do sound quite a bit like the Black Keys, but I find myself more attatched to Radio Moscow. All-in-all, I think their album art visually encapsulates their sound and I figure a lot of people here will dig it quite a bit. They sound very genuine and, while not necessarily outstandingly unique, are quite refreshing. These guys are legit.

Johnny + the Moon are an indie folk band from British Columbia. Though they sound nothing alike, the band's frontman is Dante DeCaro from Hot Hot Heat and Wolf Parade. When I saw Handsome Furs last month, these guys were the opener, and I rather enjoyed it. I seeked their album out previously when I heard they were opening and really dug it. Though Dante is a bit of a douchebag (he backhandedly insulted everyone's- except his own- music tastes while playing), this album is definitely worth a shot if you're looking for something folk-ey, pleasant, and accesible. I figure a lot of people here will enjoy it.

The Nerves were a rock band from the mid-70s that only had one release, this EP- though this version has extra tracks. Their sound, however, heavily influenced the yet to be established American punk rock scene and they even toured with the Ramones. They're one of my favourite groups right now and I think a lot of people here will dig it. As Dan Boeckner has said, this is punk before punk existed.

We all know Dinosaur Jr. is amazing, there really isn't much debate over that. However, many of their albums were released without the original lineup of J., Lou Barlow, and Murph. Their first three albums- "Dinosaur", "You're Living All Over Me", and "Bug" - are the only albums created with the original lineup ... then "Beyond" came along in '07 around the same time as their reunion tour and the original lineup was back. Personally, I thought "Beyond" could have been better (my expectations were high), but it was a really awesome album regardless. Earlier on in the year I had heard that Dino was going to release a new album and since have been anxiously awaiting. Not only that, but I was also excited that they were now signed to jagjaguwar, a very prominent indie label that has signed the likes of Sunset Rubdown, Pink Mountaintops, and Julie Doiron, among others. I wasn't a big fan of Merge and was a little dissappointed when I had found out "Beyond" would be released under them.
Personally, I think everyone should download this simply on the principle that it's a new Dino album, but I recognize that not everyone may be as excited about it as I am. The album itself sounds amazing, arguably better than Beyond, and reminds me a lot of the "Where You Been" era of Dinosaur Jr. (aside from "You're Living All Over Me," my favourite Dinosaur Jr. album). Give it a try and pick yourself up a hard copy on June 23rd (along with the new Sunset Rubdown album, Dragonslayer).

Better known for his work in the band Galneryus and Animetal Syu has another project up his sleeve. Started in 2002 under the name Aushvitz it was a slow going project from the start. But the music doesn't lack in anyway. An eclectic mix of Extreme Metal, Shred, and Hard Rock. The downside? Every release is a single with no album even on the horizon. Recently the name was changed to Spinal Cord after a long hiatus with a promise to kick it into high gear. With another single late last year and no info from the bands side again it's not looking good. But for now enjoy whats out

As has been stated many times, Emily Wells is an "anomoly" (a word used by many critics). She's a multi-instrumentalist that was offered a major record deal at 18, denied it, and now has released two albums on her own accord, with "The Symphonies" being her most recent. Emily Wells' voice is a cross between Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart though she often sounds like Beth Gibbons of Portishead (though the music is quite different than that of Portishead). She frequently uses violins (arguably her main instrument), looping, drum machines, and children's instruments (including toy echo mics that I definitely remember playing with as a child). In short, Emily Wells is creativity in music; she fuses genres in a very accesible way. Even fans of Post-Rock, especially you, Tim, will more than likely enjoy this. Right now, Emily is definitely the coolest artist I have came accross in a while.

I can't find any samples anywhere, Fin de Siècle weren't exactly well known. Nine Barns was their last album and is really a quite beautiful, interesting and eerie Ambient album that sometimes boarders on Neofolk in a few songs. The ambience is mostly created through wonderfully creative violin, guitar and drum work, with sound clips and backing synth in many places added to it. The wonderful, intense and eerie atmosphere the violin work of Florence Cailleux can create is especially noticeable on tracks like "Fearless Femme" and "Prison". "Daddy" is an incredibly intriguing musical adaption of Sylvia Plath's poem by the same name, with a recording of Sylvia Plath herself reading the poem placed over Ambient music. If you're interested in something experimental, interesting and absorbing, give this a listen, but skip it if you don't plan on sitting down and opening yourself up to every second of the music.

If you dig them, they have two other albums out that I can upload and I think they're realeasing one for '09 too, but don't quote me on that.

OtWatM's third album and maybe my favorite. It also has one of the coolest covers I've seen, and giving it a good look I think enhances the feel of the music. Something about the atmosphere of the cover mixes exceptionally well with the feeling of the music, something Kim did with Nighttime Nightrhymes as well. Has a sequel to the earlier track "Reficul" ('Lucifer' backwards). Enjoy.

Split between two of my favorite Neofolk bands, the idea of which formed when the leaders of the two bands met at an orgy in Germany. Satyriasis is the male version of nymphomania, and as is to be expected, many of the songs are very erotically charged, though this is a common aspect of both bands' music. Both the individual songs and the two collaborative efforts are fantastic, and the ORE songs are some of my favorites of theirs. Highly suggested.

Amesoeurs first and last album and crowning achievement, for the most part is sounds like the songs "Faiblesse Des Sens" and "Les Ruches Malades" from previous releases, the latter of which has been rerecorded and holds the spot of track 2. The album beautifully blends Post-Punk and Black Metal together, with most songs leaning towards the former as mentioned, with Audrey's singing. Neige's shrieks appear on "Recueillement", "I XIII V XIX XV V XXI XVIII XIX – IX XIX – IV V I IV" (Amesoeurs-Is-Dead; the most Black Metal song on the album, which would fit better in a Peste Noire album, really) and "Au Crépuscule de Nos Rêves". Wonderful ending to the band and finality of their sound.

Most people on Accelerated Evolution know that I grew up on blugrass and still have a huge soft spot in my heart for the all things bluegrass. Shit, I have a wheatland music festival sticker on the back of my jeep.

When Gid Tanner teamed up with blind guitarist Riley Puckett and signed to Columbia in 1924, they created the label's earliest so-called "hillbilly" recording. Gid Tanner formed The Skillet Lickers in 1926. the first line-up was Gid Tanner, Riley Puckett, Clayton McMichen and Fate Norris. Between 1926 and 1931 they recorded 88 sides for Columbia. Eighty-two of these were commercially issued. Later members were Lowe Stokes, Bert Layne, Hoke Rice, Arthur Tanner and Hoyt "Slim" Bryant. Their best-selling single was "Down Yonder", a hillbilly breakdown, in 1934 on RCA Victor. They disbanded in 1931, but reformed for occasional recordings after a couple of years with a changing line-up. "Back Up and Push" was another well-known recording. The Skillet Lickers, together with fellow North Georgians Fiddlin' John Carson and the Georgia Yellow Hammers, made Atlanta and North Georgia an early center of old-time stringband music, especially the hard-driving fiddle-based style employed by each of these performers.

This album is, simply put, one of the best hip-hop albums I've heard in years. Something for everyone who enjoys hip-hop with an eye on the nice sides of life. That said, politics, the dangers behind trap-doors and even zombies are discussed on this album in a brilliant, witty and simply fantastic way. Teej is a different sort of rapper to the grimey or gangsta' rappers (not that I don't enjoy some of those too as I do). His style is very literate with many references to art, ancient gods and all manner of things that you would not expect to hear discussed by someone who is all about the street. Tom Caruana is an absolutely brilliant producer making some of the best hip-hop beats in the UK and armed with an amazing sense of creativity and originality (he also does guest vocals on the song 'Curse of the Corporate Body Rotters'). He has worked with excellent UK hip-hop artists such as Dr. Syntax, Elemental, Skinnyman and others. Together Teej and Tom are Teejuana, an unstoppable force in psychedelic hip-hop. you know its not often enough that i go through all the music on my over cluttered hard drive and give what was once forgotten an honest listen. and, after a few spins, i think its time to share. lyrical stylings that are reminiscent of early belle & sebastion and jangly 60's guitar pop, with some modern day "get up and move" beats. this is probably the only way i'm able to describe voxtrot, a band that people first took notice of around '06 when it seemed that every other week another band or song about wolves would be the latest thing to talk about. raised by wolves is a five song ep that gives a pretty good insight of things to come from the band early on. while i can't say that the band has entirly lived up to everything it built up from this ep (i wanted a bit more from their first lp), they will always have a place in my heart and on my hard drive.
this isn't to say that what they have done since is a complete letdown. quite the opposite. i'm just waiting for the full album that really shows off the band's full potential.

The Arbitrarys are Josh Sandu and Naomi Kavka of Prince George, BC. On this album it's Sandu on guitar and Kavka on cello, with a little clarinet and piano here and there. They toured Canada the summer of '08 with a full band, and sometimes they take on the full band at their live shows in town. Kavka has a beautiful, classically trained voice that at times sounds haunting, especially on "It'll Pass." Both have mastered harmonizing with one another. Normally I prefer a fuller sound, but these two manage to pull off the two person band with grace. I tend to overlook local artists when I am deciding on an album to play, simply because I feel like a chotch when they're my close friends, but I can't seem to keep this one off repeat.
