cave in - jupiter

Hey kids! It's been a while since i posted anything for you, so here's an album by the late, great Cave In.

Early in their career, the band played crushing hardcore with crunchy guitars and occasional rocking melodies. Somewhere along the way, they decided to drop the hardcore thing and make spaced out rock with heavy guitars and some metal undercurrents.

Jupiter is probably my favorite of their un-hardcore days, this release containing demo versions of "Stained Silver" and "Rubber and Glue" (titled "Bigger Riff" here) from the follow-up album Antenna. These versions are better than the ones that made it to Antenna, in my opinion.

ANYWAYS, just check it out. It's a solid album from a solid band.

Amesoeurs first and last album and crowning achievement, for the most part is sounds like the songs "Faiblesse Des Sens" and "Les Ruches Malades" from previous releases, the latter of which has been rerecorded and holds the spot of track 2. The album beautifully blends Post-Punk and Black Metal together, with most songs leaning towards the former as mentioned, with Audrey's singing. Neige's shrieks appear on "Recueillement", "I XIII V XIX XV V XXI XVIII XIX – IX XIX – IV V I IV" (Amesoeurs-Is-Dead; the most Black Metal song on the album, which would fit better in a Peste Noire album, really) and "Au Crépuscule de Nos Rêves". Wonderful ending to the band and finality of their sound.

My second favorite Tiamat album after it's predecessor, Wildhoney, and another favorite album of mine, A Deeper Kind of Slumber is an entirely different step, yet a logical continuation from Wildhoney. The album is incredibly varied yet maintains an all around cohesive set of emotions that draws it together perfectly. It bounces between Metal and more Rockish songs like catchy opener "Cold Seed". The music is overall soothing and thoughtful, with Johan Edlunds vocals (now totally void of growls) maintaining a feeling of both being detatched yet emotional. The soothing sound of lapping waves and gorgeous synths in "Atlantis As A Lover", exploration of drug addiction "Alteration X 10", the psychadelic "Four Leary Biscuits", the gorgeous instrumental "Kite" and the chanting of "The Whores Of Babylon" are examples of what make this album so creative and special. It's not something that can be explained, but has to be experienced.

I'm going to try and restrain myself, because my description of Wildhoney could turn into a massive review. Wildhoney is, without a doubt, one of my favor albums ever, Metal or otherwise. It's one of the most well crafted, complete Metal albums I've ever heard. No second is unnecessary, no song filler, every song is necessary to understand every other. It's a psychadelic, gothic journey. The album, just over 40 minutes in length, is essentially a single song that was split up into 10 tracks. Every song bleeds together with the next beautifully, making the album a journey and experience, not merely a collection of songs. It's a highly personal travel through the thoughts and emotions of Johan Edlund. The music covers many emotions and sounds. From the gorgeous titular intro to the aggressive "The AR", backed by choir like and psychadelic electronic synths and a stunning spoken word bridge backed by Industrial music and gentle guitar strums to the synth and drum driven beauty that is "Gaia", this album is wonderful. More so than even the past two album, Wildhoney's lyrics are wonderful.

This rerelease of Wildhoney is accompanied by the Gaia EP, which consists of remixes of various songs from Wildhoney, as well as a Pink Floyd cover, a band which Edlund was apparently listening to often at the time of the creation of this album. Enjoy.

The follow up to The Astral Sleep, Clouds is Tiamat's final Death Metal album. If I had to describe it, I'd call it The Astral Sleep, but better. The creativity and slight dreaminess continue, the riffs get better and better and Johan Edlund's growls sound much better. The lyrics are, again, as amazing as the music. It's just a wonderful Swedeath album; the play between an acoustic solo and an electric solo in "Undressed", the dark acoustics accompanied by the forboding riffs and snappy drum work that pops in at the beginning of "The Sleeping Beauty", and the dreamy chorus to "In a Dream" are three particularly impressive parts that stick out and mark this as a spectacular Death Metal album.

Sweden's Tiamat is best known for their Gothic Metal and Goth Rock work. Their fourth release, Wildhoney, is iconic and their recent Goth Rock work, including this years Amanethes, is well known. However, long, long ago they were part of the Swedeath scene and have been sadly underrated, often ignored in the face of bands like Dismember, Unleashed and Grave. Any fan of Swedeath or old school DM in general should find this album enjoyable, or for those familiar with Tiamat's early work, a classic. The Astral Sleep is their second album and second to last DM album, preceeded by the less entertaining Sumerian Cry and followed by the wonderful Clouds. The riffage will be familiar to Swedeath fans. Like all the other iconic Swedeath bands, Tiamat's style is unique but shares a memorable feel with the other Swedeath bands, marking it a member of that elite group of DM pioneers. The production is rough and the guitar tone thick and meaty. Most of the songs are excellent, straight forward Death Metal, but the album displays Tiamat as one of the most creative Swedeath bands. "Mountain Of Doom" begins with gorgeous synths and acoustic, and "The Southernmost Voyage" is almost entirely acoustic and filled with dream like synths and singing, broken up with a soaring solo. The lyrics are also great.

Simply stated, UK's Warning play Doom, and to elaborate a bit further, UK's Warning play the most authentic, emotional, depressing, heart-wrenching and "true" doom that you will ever hear. It's a journey any metal fan has to take, in order to gain that little shred of hope, that inspiration still exists in this world.

"...maybe it's my 70's upbringing as a progressive rock geek returning to haunt me, because this music is art rock if it's anything.

The songs are relentlessly episodic. The band plays in 4/4 only grudgingly and only long enough to respectably establish a groove before veering off into multi-metered mania!
If you dissect the guitar playing you'll find the ghostly image of Fripp a-leering. These conceits may or may not thrill you, but when they're executed this well and recorded this clearly, I don't believe you could walk away unimpressed.

It's the eerily symbiotic partnership of guitarist Dan Rock and Brian McAlpin that impacts most astoundingly. Not a lead lick goes by that isn't harmonized in any one of dozens of sophisticated scaler schemes - you couldn't mistake these two for one guy and an Eventide unless you were genuinely ignorant.

The egoless interplay between Rock and McAlpin is virtuosic, and their composing is a bountiful pleasure.

Psychotic Waltz were a progressive rock/metal band from San Diego who achieved a decent amount of fame overseas, but never quite struck a chord with american audiences. i'm not a musician and can't claim to truly understand all of the technical underpinnings of their music, but the songs on display here are original, ambitious, and most importantly an absolute blast to hear. Buddy Lackey (current Deadsoul Tribe frontman) had an honesty in everything he sang that grabs you deep inside and rubs you in all the right ways. the guitar, bass, and drums all sound psychotic as hell (hoshit,pun) without sounding pretentious; i.e. i've never gotten the feeling that Dan Rock's solos were only there to show us how good Dan Rock was at playing the guitar

recommended for fans of Spiral Architect and Watchtower

highly recommended for anyone who has never heard either of those bands
