phuse - mingus lingers

band: phuse
album: mingus lingers
genre: funk, jazz
country: ireland
year: 2008

Fronted by Dubliner Gavin Lockhart, Phuse is a collective of musicians where each performer effortlessly blends a myriad of styles - jazz, hip-hop, funk, electronica, ambient, cinematic backdrops and break-beats into a deep and intense soundscape.

This sound is created by the band's integration of standard acoustic instruments such as double bass, drums, saxophone and piano with electric guitars, samplers and a host of other electronic compositional tools.

this album has been playing pretty much every other hour in my apartment for the last week. beautiful mix of styles; never redundant, never boring.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Artist: Bon Iver
Album: For Emma, Forever Ago
Genre: Folk Pop
Country: US
Year: 2008

I can't describe this album much better than this:

From allmusic.com:
Bon Iver is the work of Justin Vernon. He isolated himself in a remote cabin in Wisconsin for almost four months, writing and recording the songs on For Emma, Forever Ago, his haunting debut album. A few parts (horns, drums, and backing vocals) were added in a North Carolina studio, but for the majority of the time it's just Vernon, his utterly disarming voice, and his enchanting songs. The voice is the first thing you notice. Vernon's falsetto soars like a hawk and when he adds harmonies and massed backing vocals, it can truly be breathtaking. "The Wolves (Acts I & II)" truly shows what Vernon can do as he croons, swoops, and cajoles his way through an erratic and enchanting melody like Marvin Gayeafter a couple trips to the backyard still. "Skinny Love" shows his more of his range as he climbs down from the heights of falsetto and shouts out the angry and heartachey words quite convincingly. Framing his voice are suitably subdued arrangements built around acoustic guitars and filled out with subtle electric guitars, the occasional light drums, and slide guitar. Vernon has a steady grasp of dynamics too; the ebb and flow of "Creature Fear" is powerfully dramatic and when the chorus hits it's hard not to be swept away by the flood of tattered emotion. Almost every song has a moment where the emotion peaks and hearts begin to weaken and bend: the beauty of that voice is what pulls you through every time. For Emma captures the sound of broken and quiet isolation, wraps it in a beautiful package, and delivers it to your door with a beating, bruised heart. It's quite an achievement for a debut and the promise of greatness in the future is high.

greyboy allstars - what happened to television?

band: the greyboy allstars
album: what happened to television?
genre: funk, jazz
country: us
year: 2007

The Greyboy Allstars (GBA) are a San Diego funk and jazz group created in the early 1990s. The group began as collaboration of DJ Greyboy (turntable) with Karl Denson (saxophone, flute) during weekly shows at the Green Circle Bar in San Diego and on the DJ Greyboy albums Home Cooking and Freestylin’. Together they gradually gathered musicians co-founding a house band including Robert Walter (keyboards), Chris Stillwell (bass), Elgin Park (also known as Mike Andrews) (guitar), and Zak Najor (drums). The Greyboy Allstars were a major part of the mid-90s acid jazz movement and a catalyst for renewed interest in late 60s/early 70s soul jazz. Denson has described the Greyboy Allstars as a boogaloo band, a distinction which has set them apart from other contemporary soul jazz/acid jazz combos.

i've been listening to this album pretty regularly for the last year. i don't know a lot about the genre they fall into, but this is a solid, super entertaining album you should check out

i'll send YOUR space!!
