cave in - jupiter

Hey kids! It's been a while since i posted anything for you, so here's an album by the late, great Cave In.

Early in their career, the band played crushing hardcore with crunchy guitars and occasional rocking melodies. Somewhere along the way, they decided to drop the hardcore thing and make spaced out rock with heavy guitars and some metal undercurrents.

Jupiter is probably my favorite of their un-hardcore days, this release containing demo versions of "Stained Silver" and "Rubber and Glue" (titled "Bigger Riff" here) from the follow-up album Antenna. These versions are better than the ones that made it to Antenna, in my opinion.

ANYWAYS, just check it out. It's a solid album from a solid band.

Ajattara - Noitumaa

Everyone who knows Finlands Ajattara knows of hateful metal about whores, hell and sin. well. this album is a bit different. Still the same old hateful Ajattara but.... acoustic. and with a Didgeridoo no less. And the bass parts played on a Nylon String acoustic. I had my doubts and they were squashed. Its nothing less of amazing. This is quite a huge departure from previous albums and it turned out very well. Good on them for taking a chance like this. Ikuisen Aamun Sara has even been described by some as "Tribal Rape Music"

1. keuhkosi
2. massat
3. mitä kuolema parantaa?
4. saatana palvoo meitä
5. saveen saarnattu
6. ikuisen aamun sara
7. kielletyn sanat
8. säkeitä riippuneesta lihasta
9. lammas

Heres a little preview in the form of the video for the single

This is the second CD packed in with the OST for the anime series Paradise Kiss. It is comprised of singles from the Japanese indie band The Babys over the years, since Paradise Kiss used these as background music during some scenes in the show (and the vocalist is a voice actor for one of the main characters).

If you're into softer J-rock at least give a few tracks a listen like Alien, My Little Girl, RRPP, Kimi no Yoru, and Romantic na Speed de.

Eikichi Yazawa - Loser

Track Listing:
1. Loser

This is Eikichi Yazawa's (矢沢永吉) latest single that was released earlier in the year. It was the theme song used for SEGA's newest installment in their Ryu ga Gotoku series (or Yakuza, as it's renamed in the United States and Europe). It's more upbeat then rock, though. But still a great single from the legendary Yazawa.

Track Listing:
  1. Traveling Over The Ocean's Skull

On this 44 minute long EP, Wrest takes Leviathan out of the project's usual raw Black Metal and explores a similar aesthetic with Dark Ambient. Much of the music is created with guitar strains and feedback, lending an almost Drone feel to it.

The Dear Hunter - Act 1: The Lake South, The River North

The Dear Hunter's debut. Layered and complex instrumentals make up the musical heart of the album, primarily in the style of progressive rock but also incorporating elements of orchestral music, blues-rock, jazz, ragtime, and ambient, sometimes several times in the space of a single song. The vocals are similarly varied, with pop-ballad sections giving way to dense harmonization that would shame a barbershop quartet.

The album is also a concept album, the first in a set of 6 telling the surreal story of the titular character The Dear Hunter.

I like this one a lot, but Act II (The second album) is better in my opinion.

Sune Rose Wagner

artist: sune rose wagner
album: self titled
year: 2008

like the raveonettes? wondering how you didn't hear about this album? well don't feel bad, apparently no one really did. and sune seemed to be pretty okay with that, as the release of this album was about as low key as the album itself. maintaining his lo-fi sound from the raveonettes, but presented in a more shoe-gaze fashion, this is some norweigian goodness that sounds a bit like sigur ros having a love affair with the 60's.

The Pecker EP

Artist: Big Old Eyes
Album: The Pecker EP
Year: 2005
Genre: Alternative Rock, Indie Rock
Country: Canada

The first release from Prince George's own Big Old Eyes, essentially known as the greatest band to come out of PG. It's only two songs, but it certainly showcases the talent that the band was only just beginning to discover.

More to come! I plan on uploading their discography, as well as frontman Rob Dunlop's solo material.

Aushvitz/Spinal Cord - 2002-2006

Better known for his work in the band Galneryus and Animetal Syu has another project up his sleeve. Started in 2002 under the name Aushvitz it was a slow going project from the start. But the music doesn't lack in anyway. An eclectic mix of Extreme Metal, Shred, and Hard Rock. The downside? Every release is a single with no album even on the horizon. Recently the name was changed to Spinal Cord after a long hiatus with a promise to kick it into high gear. With another single late last year and no info from the bands side again it's not looking good. But for now enjoy whats out

T.Rex - The Slider

Artist: T.Rex
Album: The Slider
Year: 1972
Genre: Glam Rock, Proto-Punk, Classic Rock
Country: UK

Simply put, it's summer, and what a disservice I would be doing if I didn't share an excellent album to kick start the hot months.  Not much else gives me the feeling of freedom and possibility with as much zest as a good ol' T.Rex album.  T.Rex is one of those bands that should have been/should be more popular than they are.  Marc Bolan is simply fabulous, and definitely a must on everyone's summer evening play list.

The Coral

artist: the coral
album: the coral
year:2002
genre: folk, neo-psychedelic(ish)

mixing in some olde tyme folk and neo psychedelic sounds the coral had an original hit in 2002 with their debut album. what's happened since then? well honestly nothing all that notable some four or five albums later. admitidedly after nightfreak and the sons of becker i didn't feel there was any reason to keep up to date with them. but that doesn't change what once was. genre splicing and sound blending, this album is fantastic. by all means though don't let me tell you what to think about their later albums. feel free to update me on their latest.
