V/A Anarcho Compilation

Band: V/A
Album: Nick's Magical Anarcho Compilation
Genre: Folk/Punk
Country: USA
Year: 2012

This is a comp I put together of the bands that I have select discographies of, so anyone interested in any of the groups can tell me and I can upload what I have of their material. I put together my favorite groups and some of my favorite tracks by them. Alot of these artists (although certainly not all) distribute their music for free, and play in garages and small venues for free. Quite the DIY punk mentality, but just folky instead of crusty. And there's a nice variety here. Fun dancey hoedown jams and slow emotional ones; fun lyrics and political lyrics; old men and young kids; well known groups (Chumba and Against Me) and no name kids.

I hope you guys enjoy it. And like I said, comment here or on AE if you would like to request albums from any group/person on the comp.

Tracklist:

01 - Mischief Brew - Thanks Bastards
02 - Chumbawamba - Word Bomber
03 - Al Baker - Til the Fences Fall
04 - Saw Wheel - Obvious Hit
05 - Defiance Ohio - Oh Susquehanna
06 - Andzrej Stepien - Robin Hood
07 - David Rovics - New Orleans
08 - Johnny One Lung - Fix Up
09 - Tin Tree Factory - Revolution Pop
10 - Casey Neill - Dancing on the Ruins (of Multinational Corporations)
11 - Madeline - Dumpster Dive Mother
12 - Against Me - Impact
13 - Joey Only - Fire on Anarchist Mountain
14 - Shannon Murray - Conspiracy Theory
15 - Bread and Roses - Buried in Business Casual
16 - Rosa - Whiskey Smile

moving mountains - pneuma

band: moving mountains
album: pneuma
genre: post-rock, indie rock
country: usa
year: 2007

"...I have yet to detail why I’m so ticked off at myself for being woefully under-informed. Pick your reason. But it’s probably the vast diversities between songs - “Aphelion” mixes horns with startling screams, while “Sol Solis” is a simple, acoustic ballad. Their ability to write a mathy and atmospheric rock song (“Alastika”) never hampers their aptitude at transcending the restraints of ‘regular’ post-rock (“The Earth And The Sun”). Quite simply, there is nothing these guys can’t do."

This is music in the 'post-rock/indie rock mashup' vein that bands like the Appleseed Cast or A Red Season Shade occupy, though said bands RARELY reach the intensity or the sheer quality Moving Mountains have put together here.

sgt. - stylus fantasticus

band: sgt.
album: stylus fantasticus
genre: post-rock
country: japan
year: 2008

"Formed in 1999, the Japanese four-piece sgt. utilizes a broad range of genres to create their distinctive sound, including that of post-rock, jazz, ambient and improvisation. Using a guitar, violin, drums and bass guitar, the band creates uplifting instrumental compositions comparable to such acts as Toe or Anoice."

Sgt. are a fabulous little band from Japan who make instrumental music which varies from Caspian-like epic (p.s. listen to Caspian) to an almost Ozric Tentaclesian jam, but with more focus and less rave drugs

Ascent of Everest - How Lonely Sits the City!

Artist: Ascent of Everest
Album: How Lonely Sits the City!
Genre: Post-Rock (Instrumental)
Country of Origin: USA
Year: 2006

Track Listing:

1. Alas, Alas! The Breath of Life
2. As the City Burned We Trembled for We Saw the Makings of It's Undoing in Our Own Hearts.
3. Molotov
4. A Threnody (For the Victims of November Second)
5. If I Could Move Mountains
i. Majesty and Awe
ii. Collapse Into Understanding
iii. Gathered Hearts Rise and Sing at the First Breath of Dawn

Not sure how many of you are familiar with these guys so I thought I'd up it. The Ascent of Everest are another diamond in the sea of post-rock artists nowadays. I'd say they are very comparable to artists like Yndi Halda, Caspian and a little bit of Laura thrown in for good measure. Having seven members from all across the country brings a lot to the table. Each member contributes his or her own style, which is then intertwined with the calming ambient sound of the band.

Warning - Watching from a Distance

Artist: Warning
Album: Watching from a Distance
Genre: Doom Metal
Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Year: 2006

Track Listing:

1. Watching from a Distance
2. Footprints
3. Bridges
4. Faces
5. Echoes

“Take ahold of my life
Make it into one that I want it to be
Make a whole of my life
Make my faces one that I want you to see.”

Simply stated, UK's Warning play Doom, and to elaborate a bit further, UK's Warning play the most authentic, emotional, depressing, heart-wrenching and "true" doom that you will ever hear. The vocal delivery and lyrics are nothing short of spectacular and once you've taken this trip with Pat Walker (vocals) and crew, you will be changed... It's a journey any metal fan has to take, in order to gain that little shred of hope, that inspiration still exists in this world.

“When I am not alone
I sever silent moments
Building bridges with meaningless words
And only feel the distance further
Remember being happy in our silence
I wish that you were with me tonight.”

psychotic waltz - a social grace

band: psychotic waltz
album: a social grace
genre: progressive metal
country: USA
year: 1990

"...maybe it's my 70's upbringing as a progressive rock geek returning to haunt me, because this music is art rock if it's anything.

The songs are relentlessly episodic. The band plays in 4/4 only grudgingly and only long enough to respectably establish a groove before veering off into multi-metered mania!
If you dissect the guitar playing you'll find the ghostly image of Fripp a-leering. These conceits may or may not thrill you, but when they're executed this well and recorded this clearly, I don't believe you could walk away unimpressed.

It's the eerily symbiotic partnership of guitarist Dan Rock and Brian McAlpin that impacts most astoundingly. Not a lead lick goes by that isn't harmonized in any one of dozens of sophisticated scaler schemes - you couldn't mistake these two for one guy and an Eventide unless you were genuinely ignorant.

The egoless interplay between Rock and McAlpin is virtuosic, and their composing is a bountiful pleasure.

Ward evans & Norm Leggio on bass & drums tackle the wickedly complex structures with bravado, on the aural evidence they relish the challenge of playing these tunes, and succeed. This band must live to rehearse!
" -Review By Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa guitarist)

Psychotic Waltz were a progressive rock/metal band from San Diego who achieved a decent amount of fame overseas, but never quite struck a chord with american audiences. i'm not a musician and can't claim to truly understand all of the technical underpinnings of their music, but the songs on display here are original, ambitious, and most importantly an absolute blast to hear. Buddy Lackey (current Deadsoul Tribe frontman) had an honesty in everything he sang that grabs you deep inside and rubs you in all the right ways. the guitar, bass, and drums all sound psychotic as hell (hoshit, pun) without sounding pretentious; i.e. i've never gotten the feeling that Dan Rock's solos were only there to show us how good Dan Rock was at playing the guitar

recommended for fans of Spiral Architect and Watchtower

highly recommended for anyone who has never heard either of those bands

Uncle Outrage - The Chinchilla Album

Band: Uncle Outrage
Album: The Chinchilla Album
Genre: Junk Rock/Synth Punk
Country: Canada
Year: 2008

Self-described junk rockers from Edmonton, Alberta.  This is their fourth major album to date, and it certainly doesn't disappoint.  If you like punk shows and a healthy dance party every now and then, you'll dig this.

Mischief Brew - Smash the Windows

Band: Mischief Brew
Album: Smash the Windows
Genre: Folk/Punk
Country: USA
Year: 2005

The best there is to offer in the anarchist folk punk breed. Erik Peterson is a one man band who on occasion has a little help from his friends. Political, funny, and a hell of a song writer... he's also one of the nicest guys alive and he puts on one hell of a live show. No more description necessary. The lyrics alone are worth the price (free) of admission.

Steven Von Till - A Grave is a Grim Horse

Band: Steve Von Till
Album: A Grave is a Grim Horse
Genre: Acoustic Folk
Country of Origin: USA
Year: 2008

Track Listing:

1. A Grave is a Grim Horse
2. Clothes of Sand
3. The Acre
4. Wilow Tree
5. Valley of the Moon
6. The Spider Song
7. Looking for Dry land
8. Western Son
9. Brigit's Cross
10. Promises
11. Gravity

Steve von Till works as an elementary school teacher, is singer and guitarist for the sludge metal band Neurosis and records solo work under both his given name and the moniker Harvestman.

Very moody and melancholic American folk. The man is a genius, his ideas, his storytelling and heart that go into each track are unparalleled - so if you haven't heard his solo stuff yet, and are familiar with his more famous work (Neurosis) definitely give this a try, it shines an entirely different light on him as a singer, guitarist, musician, lyricist, and person.

Naikaku - Shell

band:
naikaku
album: shell
genre: instrumental, progressive
country: japan
year: 2006

"Shell is the second album from Japanese duo Naikaku. Bassist Satoshi Kobayashi and flautist Kazumi Suzuki receive a lot of help from session musicians Norimitsu Endo on drums and Mitsuo on guitars and trumpet. The sound Naikaku achieve is refreshingly original and exhausting in its intensity. As a point of comparison, Naikaku mixes the ferocity of King Crimson with the psychedelia of Ozric Tentacles as well as the gentle pastoral woodwinds of Anglagard, incredibly without particularly sounding like any of those bands." -sea of tranquility

recommended for fans of epic, noodley, progressive instrumental music.

This album is an obscure classic of atmospheric black/ doom metal that I found one lucky day in a (sadly now closed down) small second-hand store down the road from where I live. After a few listens to this I realised quite how lucky I was to have found it. The guitars are truly incredible and the way they are used is very different to the usual way in this genre. I really cannot describe it but I just implore you to download this album and find out for yourself how fantastic it is.

cancer conspiracy - omega

band: the cancer conspiracy
album: omega
genre: instrumental
country: usa
year: 2008

"Omega is the final testament to the instrumental indie/math/prog-rockers The Cancer Conspiracy. Recorded over four years ago, the album was left in limbo due to some unfortunately label circumstances. But even though the band has been disbanded for several years now, the music that comprises this album is not dated in the least.

"...Even though several years have passed since the time when The Cancer Conspiracy were actually a band, the release of Omega is still relevant. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this album is the fact of how much time has passed since it was recorded and how fresh it still sounds. Though it may not seem like it, this three-piece outfit has had a drastic influence on the indie music world with their willingness to experiment with multiple genres. Where Omega fits into the world of music may not be known just yet, but I definitely feel it is going to be an instrumental album in the development of many bands to come." - scenepointblank

Cancer Conspiracy were one of the first instrumental bands i ever got REALLY excited about. no gimmicks, no tech for tech's sake, just solid music by men with instruments

Keykhosro & Tahmoures Pournazeri - Mastan - Music of the Mystics

Band: Keykhosro & Tahmoures Pournazeri
Album: Mastan - Music of the Mystics
Genre: Persian Traditional Folk Music

Track Listing:
  1. Robabi
  2. Avazjan
  3. Hamraz
  4. Yar/Aieneh/Molana
  5. Eshgh Ast / Bar Aseman/ Molana
  6. Ey Del / Molana/ Baraye To/ Attar
  7. Bikam
A friend gave this to me, and I figure it'd be something interesting to share. He gave me this description:

"The music is based on the poetry of Rumi, a sufi mystic who is considered by many to be the greatest love poet. Please see here if you wish to learn more about Rumi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumi

Complex intertwining melodies spilled forth from traditional persian instruments - mainly the oud - form harmonic patterns in a manner vaguely reminiscent of the most exquisite metal or post rock. I predict listeners will find the soundscapes projected by the unique Persian musical system to be exotic and foreign yet tantalizingly familiar. This is something that should be listened to for its entirety which is 56.6 minutes."

Slug's Revenge - Revenge is Never a 4 Letter Word

Band: Slug's Revenge
Album: Revenge is Never a 4 Letter Word
Genre: Bluegrass/Punk
Country: USA
Year: 2008

Slug's Revenge is part of the Rustystrings co-op, which is essentially a bunch of anarcho kids who play bluegrass/folk music, with some punkish vocals and sensibilities. Slug's is self-recorded and produced (on Sawjaw Records... not that he gets much distrib hahaha), have all their (his) albums up for free on their (his) website, and tour people's garages and backyards. In short, your typical underground punk band. One of the best anarcho-folk bands I've ever heard (right up there with Mischief Brew, Alan Baker, and Defiance Ohio), and the new recordings are amazing. Some of the most badass pickwork I've heard and some great lyrics. Kevin is the man (and a really nice guy to boot).

It's some amazing stuff, so I hope you guys check it out.
